生詞在上下文中不是孤立的，作者一般會通過上下文給出意思相近的詞語或者暗示、線索，讓讀者利用上下文熟悉的詞語或語境理解這些詞的詞義。

準確把握詞義方法

定義法

文章作者對較難、較偏、較生疏的詞或?qū)I(yè)化的詞，一般會采用解釋或下定義的方法給讀者進行解釋說明。而定義的用詞是讀者比較熟悉的、較為常見的。定義一般由破折號、逗號或括號引出。

In a theater, or a film or television studio, the set is the scenery built to resemble a real location. It is made by carpenters and other workers, and painted and decorated to look like a real room or whatever location is required for the production. A film studio may build a set outdoors to resemble a whole street or even a small town.

重述法

類似于定義法，對生詞進行解釋說明。用于解釋的詞也是較簡單普通的詞，也可能是由or、such as、like等詞引出的同位語。

Airships are huge balloons with propellers to drive them, and they were once used to carry as many as 200 passengers. The sirships were filled with hydrogen, a light gas. However, hydrogen is also inflammable. There were several disasters in which airships caught fire, and they disappeared by the end of the 1930s.
